Released 1985 as Nikon's first integrated-motor consumer SLR. Production ran 1 year before the F-501 (1986) added AF to the same chassis. The F-301 was a transitional body — Nikon's first integrated motor before AF, then AF was added the next year.
For 2026 buyers, the F-301 is dirt cheap ($40–120) and offers integrated 2.5 fps motor drive in a manual-focus body. Same F-mount AI/AI-S compatibility. Trade-off: AAA batteries, plastic feel, no AF.
F-mount: AI / AI-S meter; AF Nikkors mount in manual focus.
