Released 1986 as Nikon's AF launch response. Production ran 4 years until 1990 when the F4 (1988, pro AF) and F-801 (1988, prosumer AF) replaced it. The F-501 marked Nikon's commitment to AF after years of the F-301 (1985, autofocus-capable but slow).
For 2026 buyers, the F-501 is one of the cheapest entry points to Nikon AF. Used at $50–150. F-mount means access to all AF, AF-D Nikkors and manual AI/AI-S Nikkors. Trade-off: 1986-era AF is slow; plastic feel; AAA batteries.
F-mount: AF Nikkor (1986+) for autofocus; AI/AI-S manual lenses meter directly. AF-S lenses mount but won't autofocus on this body (need motor in body).
