The Mamiya M645 1000S (1976) is the professional-grade model of the original M645 family, distinguished from the simplified M645J by its interchangeable viewfinder system and extended shutter range reaching 1/1000s. Like all M645 bodies, it exposes 6x4.5 cm frames on 120 or 220 roll film, yielding 15 or 30 frames respectively. The 1000S accepts the complete range of Mamiya 645 Sekor C lenses and was targeted at working photographers who needed more flexibility than the entry-level J could offer without committing to the bulk of a 6x6 or 6x7 system.

Mamiya introduced the M645 system in 1975 with two bodies: the M645J (fixed waist-level finder, 1/500s top speed) and the M645 1000S (interchangeable finder, 1/1000s top speed). The 1000S was the system's professional anchor, offering sports and action photographers the higher shutter speed they required while maintaining the same compact footprint that made the 645 format attractive compared to heavier 6x6 or 6x7 systems. The interchangeable finder was a significant differentiator -- owners could switch between a waist-level finder and an eye-level pentaprism depending on subject matter. The 1000S remained in production until the M645 Super replaced it in 1985.
The 1000S established the M645 as a credible professional tool rather than merely a student or amateur camera. The 1/1000s ceiling was adequate for most daylight action work and kept pace with competing 35mm SLRs of the era. The interchangeable finder architecture, refined in subsequent M645 bodies, gave the system genuine modularity -- a characteristic associated with Hasselblad's V-system but available here at considerably lower cost. The 645 format's near-3:2 aspect ratio also made it natural for photographers transitioning from 35mm, and negatives could be printed on standard paper sizes without cropping.
Mamiya 645 mount. Full Sekor C lens range applies: 35mm f/3.5 fish-eye, 45mm f/2.8, 55mm f/2.8, 80mm f/2.8 (standard), 80mm f/1.9 (fast portrait), 110mm f/2.8, 150mm f/3.5, 210mm f/4, 300mm f/5.6. Macro 120mm f/4. Extension tubes. Accessories specific to the 1000S: interchangeable pentaprism finder (AE prism with meter coupling), waist-level finder, and 45-degree reflex finder. Motor drive attachment available for select configurations.
