Released 1994 as a refinement of the PZ-1 (1991). Production ran 7 years until 2001 when the MZ-S replaced it. The PZ-1P's Hyper modes were Pentax's signature feature — no other manufacturer offered identical mode logic.
For 2026 buyers, the PZ-1P at $120–350 is a substantial cheaper alternative to the MZ-S. Same KAF2 lens compatibility, comparable AF speed, the unique Hyper modes. Trade-off vs MZ-S: heavier (720 g vs 520 g), no tilted top plate, plastic body feel.
Pentax KAF2 with full AF; older K and KA in manual focus.
