The Chinon CX (1974) is a Japanese M42-mount SLR made by Chinon (Japan). Mechanical horizontal-cloth shutter to 1/1000s, TTL stop-down CdS metering, manual exposure. Positioned as a budget alternative to the Pentax Spotmatic / Fujica ST801. Chinon also OEM-built bodies for Sears, Vivitar, and other brands during the 70s/80s.

Released 1974. Production ran 6 years until 1980 when Chinon shifted to K-mount bodies (CM-3, CM-4, CE) before exiting the SLR market in the early 90s.
For 2026 buyers, the Chinon CX is one of the cheapest M42 SLRs you can buy. Used at $50–130. M42 mount means access to all M42 lenses. Trade-off: brand orphanage (Chinon defunct), lower build quality than Pentax Spotmatic.
