The Mamiya 645E (c. 2000) is the entry-level body of the Mamiya 645 manual-focus system, positioned below the 645 Pro and 645 Pro TL. It is a simplified, fixed-finder 645 SLR that retains the Mamiya 645 lens mount and 120 film format while removing interchangeable film backs, interchangeable finders, and shutter-priority AE. The result is a lighter, lower-cost body aimed at students, documentary photographers, and anyone entering medium format who does not need the full modular feature set. Despite the simplifications, the 645E accepts the full range of Mamiya Sekor C and later Mamiya 645 AF lenses.

By the late 1990s the Mamiya 645 manual-focus line had evolved through several generations -- M645, M645 Super, M645 Pro, M645 Pro TL -- each adding features and price. The 645E was introduced around 2000 as a deliberate step back in specification to serve a price-sensitive segment. Mamiya simultaneously maintained the 645 AF autofocus body at the top of the lineup, leaving the 645E as an entry point into a maturing system. The 645E shares the same lens mount with the AF bodies but is a purely manual-focus platform.
The 645E is the lowest barrier of entry into the Mamiya 645 lens ecosystem. For photographers who already own Sekor C glass, the 645E body can be acquired inexpensively and provides a working camera without the mechanical complexity of interchangeable backs and finders. The fixed-back design eliminates a common failure point -- the interchangeable back dark slide and seals -- which can make a well-maintained 645E more reliable for casual use than an older Pro body with tired back seals. The trade-off is inflexibility: no Polaroid proofing, no instant back swap between ISO ratings, and no finder choice.
