Released April 1996. Production ran three years until the Rebel 2000 (1999) replaced it. The Rebel G was the volume seller of the mid-90s consumer Canon SLR market, predating the better-known Rebel 2000 with similar specs but a 7-point AF system.
For 2026 buyers, the Rebel G is the cheapest Canon EF body you can buy. $25–70 at thrift stores, estate sales, eBay. With a $50 EF 50/1.8 II lens, you have a complete EF film kit for under $100. The image quality from the pentamirror finder is slightly dimmer than the Rebel 2000 / Elan 7, but the meter and AF are competent for everyday use.
It's the entry-tier "shoot some film without thinking about it" body. Limited features, but full EF lens compatibility means you can use any Canon EF lens (modern AF L-series included) on this $30 camera.
Full Canon EF lens system (any L-series, prime, zoom). EF-S lenses do not mount. Speedlite 220EX / 380EX / 420EX flashes for ETTL.
